Introducing the Places of Change Garden Teams

The Places of Change Garden is the largest garden the Chelsea Flower Show has ever seen.  Around 40 different projects and services from across England and Wales are involved in making this inspirational project happen!

BCHA is a specialist housing and social care support provider, which helps homeless and vulnerable people access the right housing, health, learning and work opportunities. BCHA helps people find a way forward by supporting them in eight key areas: homelessness, housing and general needs, domestic violence, ex-offenders, young people, substance misuse, service user involvement and learning and work.  BCHA's New Leaf Allotment team have been designing the ‘food’ zone of the Places of Change Garden and will be providing food crops and production for cooking and eating. They are also building a clay oven and a Green house built from hundreds of recycled plastic bottles.

Cambridge Cyrenians provides accommodation and support to single, homeless, men and women in Cambridge.  Services include a specialist Mental Health Team, support for older homeless men and women, a tree nursery and allotments.  Cambridge Cyrenians are growing a range of fruit and vegetables for the Places of Change Garden including strawberries, onion sets, garlic, courgettes, kohl rabi, tomatoes, okra, lettuce, bush basil, poppies, calendula and cosmos.

Chapter 1 provides accommodation and related support services to help vulnerable people enjoy a more fulfilled life.  It is a charity, based on Christian principles, which offers human compassion and practical support to meet people’s needs respecting their faith, culture and social background.  Currently Chapter 1 works in partnership with 29 local authorities and has a growing network of 40 projects across England.  Three Chapter 1 projects are participating in the Places of Change Garden: Calverley Hill in Tonbridge Wells;  FreshStart St Austell in Cornwall; and The Limes, in Manchester. In addition, Mildmay House in Liverpool will be showing their ‘Bloomin’ Baskets’ on the trade stand.

Crisis Skylight London is an award winning education, training and employment centre for homeless and vulnerably housed people in East London. It offers practical and creative workshops in a supportive and inspiring environment together with formal learning opportunities that lead to qualifications and finding work.  The wide range of courses including arts, carpentry and IT help people to restore their well-being, regain confidence, build their basic skills and raise their aspirations.  Crisis Skylight are involved in the design of the ‘environment’ zone of the Places of Change Garden.

Cyrenians Cymru provide diverse services for homeless and socially excluded people in Swansea including residential projects, a Community Healthy Living Centre, the Res a Rec furniture recycling scheme and arts and craft workshops.  The fair trade Celfi Gallery & Gift Shop provides retail training and sells goods from the arts and furniture projects.  Cyrenians Cymru are growing plants for the Places of Change Garden, working on the wooden ‘spine’ and will also be displaying recycled craft items such as glassware which can be made to order.

Deptford Reach’s Crisis Intervention Day Centre works with vulnerable, isolated and marginalised people who have been affected by issues such as homelessness, substance misuse, misundertanding and isolation.   Services are provided which meet basic needs such as hot nutritious meals, clothing and shelter.  We provide a variety of group activities such as Art Therapy, Music Tuition, an ICT Suite, a Healthy Living Group, daily advice sessions and counselling.  A group of service-users and volunteers from Deptford Reach are growing plants for the Places of Change Garden.

Devonport House Projects is a lifehouse which provides accommodation, including supported resettlement flats, for single homeless men. Their task is to engage, nurture and enable service users towards a sustainable independent lifestyle.  Devonport House Projects Lifehouse is excited to be providing a large section of the wooden spine of the garden in their active workshop, and also growing and tending a selection of plants in our greenhouse and gardens.  They are involved in construction for the Places of Change Garden.

DTE is co-ordinated by Bradford Alliance on Community Care’s PATH project. Using a partnership approach Keyhouse, Bradford Community Environment Project, and other various homeless and addiction agencies have involved over 80 service users with the aim of broadening horizons and giving something back to the environment.  A range of projects take place including weekly Women's and Men's Days or day trips such as a tree planting trip in partnership with Yorkshire Dales Millenium Trust.  Down to Earth are growing plants for the Places of Change Garden.

We have various weekly activities such as ‘Grounded and Scruffy’, our service-user-led horticultural therapy service, and ‘Hostel Times’, our service-user involvement magazine. The Places of Change Garden has provided motivation and encouragement to service-users who have been growing the plants, supplying materials, designing and constructing the ‘environmental’ section of the garden.

Shekinah Mission, based in Plymouth, is an agency seeking to support people who are homeless, have substance misuse issues, are ex-offenders or feel socially excluded. As well as seeing to people's physical needs, Shekinah offers advice and support, temporary beds for rough sleepers, an outreach service, as well as recreational activities and meaningful accredited training for those wanting to deal with their issues and move on.  Shekinah has a drop-in centre, a temporary rough sleepers' hostel, a charity shop, a training initiative, a social enterprise, a supported employability programme and the organic fruit and vegetable farm, Growing for Life.  Shekinah are involved in construction for the Places of Change Garden.

Herefordshire SHYPP manages three foyers for previously homeless young people, a county wide outreach services to over 200 young people, a duty and crisis service and a Nightstop Scheme.  Services are needs led with the aim of enabling young people to gain independent living skills through the provision of support, education and training opportunities.  Ten young people from SHYPP are designing part of the ‘health’ zone of the Places of Change Garden entitled ‘Drug Scene – How Toxic are You?’, featuring both toxic and healing plants.

LCT HOMElink addresses the needs of homeless individuals together with the vulnerable and disadvantaged within our community.  LCT HOMElink developed their green fingers by using existing greenhouse to grow vegetables, salads and basic potted plants to sell back to the community. The success of this work has resulted HOMElink decorating roundabouts, organised hanging baskets and selling the produce to local cafes, restaurants and the public in Littlehampton.  LCT HOMElink contributed to Chelsea Flower Show 2009 and they are incredibly excited to be working on the Places of Change Garden with a Gold Medal Award in their sights!

Look Ahead Housing and Care provides support, care and housing for vulnerable people across London and the South East of England.  The service-users at Look Ahead have been involved in many aspects of the Places of Change Garden, including the design of the ‘senses’ zone.  Their concept is about hope, representing the journey a homeless person may take from the difficulties they may face to a more positive and stable outcome. Two garden sculptures designed by Look Ahead customers, which illustrate their journey and transition to a better place, will also feature.

The New Connection has grown over 20 years to provide crisis accommodation to more than 500 people every year as well as services in social support, health, criminal justice and education.  A Resources Centre provides clients with the choices to help them move on.  Activities include formal IT training, ice skating, and a photography project, film making and organic gardening.  The gardening project, in collaboration with Eden and Cornwall College, aims to allow clients to take ownership of their gardens and grow their own fresh vegetables to cook and maintain a healthier lifestyle.  The New Connection are growing plants for the Places of Change Garden.

Nurture is a social enterprise belonging to St George’s Crypt’s Faith Lodge, a 'dry hostel' for men who are experiencing homelessness which offers respite, reflection and responsibility.  Nurture aims to provide an education in horticulture through therapeutic projects such as work on allotment and farm development which help their clients recover from addiction.  Nurture are growing plants and vegetables for the Places of Change Garden, as well as conducting building work on the site.

This is part of Penrose’s Community Engagement Programme which empowers service users to take responsibility for themselves and their futures. We do this by promoting education, employment, health and a positive sense of community.

Putting Down Roots is a gardening project run by St Mungo’s for people who have experienced homelessness. 2010 marks its 10th anniversary, with volunteers currently working in Lambeth, Southwark, Haringey and Westminster in hostel grounds, public parks and on an allotment. Through this project, people develop gardening skills, grow organic vegetables and carry out hard landscaping and building projects. Their volunteers are involved with many different aspects of the Places of Change Garden.

Salisbury House is a Resettlement Salvation Army Lifehouse which offers accommodation to homeless men with the aim of supporting their clients to move into their self-catered flats.  Salisbury House also provides activities and training which facilitate their clients to move back into appropriate and sustainable accommodation within the community.  They are working with Landlife, a local company who specialise in wild flowers to cultivate a meadow area at Places of Change Garden.

SIFA Fireside works with disadvantaged people, including those who are or have been homeless, are experiencing substance misuse or are socially excluded. Services include a Volunteer Development Programme, training service users to volunteer and improve employment prospects, and the Change Kitchen, a social enterprise offering catering employment and training. Southampton Voluntary Services’ Allotment Project provides volunteers who have experienced street homeless with the opportunity to participate and work as part of a team.  Volunteers have been inspired by this work, with some now studying for horticultural qualifications while others are considering a future career related to gardening.  The Allotment Project is growing Calendula, Beetroot, Dill, Turnips and Lettuce for the Places of Change Garden.

SPARK is a social enterprise which is part of Two Saints Housing Association. SPARK offers professional quality bespoke steel fabrications for commercial and domestic settings of all sizes from gates and railings to windmills.  All profits are reinvested to provide skills and confidence opportunities to people at risk at homelessness.  For the Places of Change Garden, they are producing a section of decorative railing which demonstrates the journey of a homeless person from the street to the Chelsea Flower Show.

Bevin Court is a 54 bedded hostel for homeless men (plus 12 resettlement flats) based in Sheffield.  Bevin has always had a connection with gardening and has provided hanging baskets to the local community, been semi self sufficient with veg and has a therapeutic garden. The project is currently in the process of setting up a social enterprise (in partnership with the Archer Project) which will provide training and work opportunities for the people who live there.  Bevin has contributed towards a number of plants needed for the Places of Change Show Garden

Batley Foyer has ten self-contained studio flats, offering comfort, privacy and security for vulnerable young people. All Foyer residents are given financial, practical and emotional support tailored to their needs as well as fun social events such as cultural evenings or quiz nights.  There is a culture of client involvement and participation in all aspects of life the Foyer, including the appearance of the foyer, foyer policies and the publication of the monthly newsletter.  Batley Foyer are growing over 200 plants for the Places or Change Garden which has lead clients to improve the foyer’s gardens and build a decked tranquility area. 

Stonham – Link House, Bower Place and Suffolk House

Three of Stonham’s services are collaborating on their contribution to the Places of Change Garden.  Link House and Suffolk House accommodate and support ex-offenders and Bower Place supports people with mental health issues.  They provide a wide range of help including access to education and work, finding a new longer term home and crucially helping people integrate back into society.  The three services have devised and designed a striking 10ft ‘Planted Man’ for the ‘health’ zone of the Places of Change Garden, which will depict a homeless man lying on a bench. The frame will be filled with plants that have healing properties, such as St John’s Wort.

Stonham Hull Women's Services are an accommodation project offering support to 14 homeless vulnerable women, including those with babies, which includes a hostel and self-contained flats. The services offer various kinds of support including housing, education, training, finance, health and wellbeing.  Hull Women’s Services have been involved in designing a plot for the Places of Change Garden as well as planting 1000 bluebells and numerous other seeds.

It is in the heart of Ovis Farm to help broken people rebuild their lives.  “The House of Heroes” provides differing levels of supported accommodation for men and women who come from a homeless or broken background and may struggle with alcohol or drug addiction.   The "Heroes @ Home" project provides support for desperate family members, partners and children.  The House of Heroes are really enjoying their experience of growing seeds and plants in polytunnels for the Places of Change Garden.

The Porch charity runs the Steppin' Stone Centre, which providing day long support for homeless and vulnerably housed people wanting to move forward in their lives, away from street-life and addiction.  The Steppin' Stone Centre provides wholesome and affordable meals, laundry facilities, showers, free clothing, a library, PC and internet access, acupuncture, counseling and a range of social and recreational activities including qualifications in IT, cookery and gardening.  In addition to all of this, they have an allotment and small orchard which is now buzzing with excitement as they grow plants for the Places of Change Garden and preparing to do gardening work at the garden itself. 

Trinity Winchester

Trinity Winchester has two drop-in centres, Bradbury House in Winchester and the Camrose Centre in Basingstoke, which support the needs of those who are homeless or vulnerably housed.  Both services offer a range of services from shower and laundry facilities, free meals, and advice on various matters including housing, benefits or substance misuse.  They also hold various activities such as art, IT, creative writing and cookery classes and gardening, reading and sports groups.  The popular gardening group was keen to be involved in growing plants for the Places of Change Garden and both centres are growing broad beans, beetroot, turnips, dill and poached egg plants.

Watford New Hope Trust provides welfare and accommodation services for homeless people, supporting over 800 individuals per year. The Trust runs a market garden project which uses horticultural therapy to give a meaningful occupation and help build the self-esteem of participants. The market garden has grown an array of flowers and vegetables for the Places of Change Garden this year, including stocks, alliums, borridge, cabbage and garlic. The furniture recycling project is also contributing to the garden.

Aspire Oxfordshire helps people who’ve experienced homelessness achieve positive change through access to paid work in real business environments.  Based in Oxford, Aspire runs a garden maintenance and design business for private individuals and businesses alike, with many regular customers.  In collaboration with Burford Garden Company, Aspire is developing a 7 acre site growing, fruit, vegetables and flowers for sale to the local community.

Create is an award winning Social Enterprise.  As a not-for-profit company they are committed to developing innovative training and employment opportunities for people who have been homeless, marginalised or vulnerable.  Working throughout Yorkshire, Create staff and volunteers are motivated and driven to rebuild their lives.

Running businesses as diverse as outside catering, cafés and fashion retail, Create offers people a real workplace to develop their skills, getting a foot back on the ladder of making a meaningful contribution to society.  With around 35 staff and twice as many volunteers, Create has seen work transform many lives. This year they have opened Create Potential, their employment training academy.  In partnership with major UK retailers, the academy will see 60 people train in the Create businesses and move onto employment across the region each year.

Gilead Foundation is a rehabilitation centre which helps people with life controlling problems such as drugs and alcohol.  The centre is a residential centre and people come from all over the country.  Gilead works with Risdon Enterprises which is a farming social enterprise who provides work therapy and skills training in various activities such as agriculture, catering, building, landscaping, administration.  The social enterprise’s aim is to work towards bringing in the finance needed to help support the charity and clients that cannot find the full funds to come on Gilead’s programme.

Putting Down Roots is a gardening project for people who have experienced homelessness.  Run by London’s largest homelessness charity, St. Mungo’s, it aims to support people to rebuild their lives through practical work, making a contribution to their local community.  Participants beautify public green spaces across London and grow vegetables at an allotment. In so doing, they learn or rediscover work and general skills, improve their self-esteem and confidence and experience mental and physical health benefits. Moreover, their work breaks down barriers in the wider community, enabling them to further engage with it and move towards greater independence.

SPARK is a social enterprise which is part of Two Saints Housing Association.  SPARK offers professional quality bespoke steel fabrications for commercial and domestic settings of all sizes from gates and railings to windmills.  All profits are reinvested to provide skills and confidence opportunities to people at risk at homelessness.  For the Places of Change Garden, they are producing a section of decorative railing which demonstrates the journey of a homeless person from the street to the Chelsea Flower Show.

Suitcase Media offers organisations the opportunity to commission projects such as audio tours, podcasts, video and interactive multi media experiences.

We run a production training programme in hostels and day centres for homeless people who wish to become part of these projects by using technical skills, researching, writing or presenting.

Winter Willow is a social enterprise, part of the charity WinterComfort for the Homeless, based in Cambridge.

We manufacture woven willow eco-coffins and other basketry items, with our centre users, staff and volunteers working as a production team.  As a social business the surplus we make goes directly to support the work of our charity team – helping those who are at risk of homelessness or who are already homeless.

We craft our eco-coffins with care and passion, using only English willow from sustainable stocks, which we soak, grade and weave in our own workshops.  You can see an example of our eco-coffins on the Places of Change Tradestand at the show.
